Authentic Dal Fry Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the Dal:
    • 1 cup Toor Dal (Split Pigeon Pea Lentils)
    • 2.5 cups water
    • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
    • 1 medium-sized tomato, chopped
    • 1 teaspoon salt
  • For the Tempering (Tadka):
    • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
    • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
    • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
    • 1-inch ginger, minced
    • 2 green chilies, slit
    • 1 medium-sized tomato, chopped
    • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
    • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
    • ½ teaspoon garam masala
    • Salt to taste
  • For Garnish:
    • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
    • Lemon wedges

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Dal:
    • Wash the toor dal thoroughly.
    • In a pressure cooker, add the dal, water, turmeric powder, chopped tomato, and salt. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.
    • Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mash the dal lightly with a spoon.
  2. Prepare the Tempering (Tadka):
    • In a pan, heat the ghee or oil.
    • Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
    • Add finely chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
    • Add minced garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for a minute until the raw smell goes away.
    • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and mushy.
    • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Cook the spices for a minute.
  3. Combine Dal and Tempering:
    • Pour the cooked dal into the pan with the tempering. Mix well.
    • Add water if needed to adjust the consistency.
    • Let the dal simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend together.
  4. Garnish and Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves.
    • Serve hot with steamed rice, chapati, or naan.
    • Squeeze lemon juice on top before serving for an added zing.
